Milk [Toronto] – Admire the sweet confection at this upscale patisserie in burgeoning Leslieville
It’s a bit of a journey to get to Queen Street East but with a litter of tempting delicatessens, specialty shops, cafes and everything vintage you could easily spend a day browsing through the relaxed neighbourhood of Leslieville.
Your first visit must be to the chicly designed Bobbette & Belle patisserie. The team there has created an atmosphere where art and sweets collide. Rustic and elegant, the space is laid out with design in mind; two shelves flank the baked goods counter. One side features beautifully tiered wedding cakes where creativity is limitless. On the other, neatly packaged specialties of salted caramels, handmade marshmallows and chocolate biscotti are displayed.
The stark white interior is modern making the space bright and airy for the delectable edibles to be viewed to their full advantage. Admire the assortment of sweet confection at the counter: macarons, cupcakes, tarts, cakes and scones are beautifully displayed ‘Euro style’. Each treat is carefully thought out with a devotion to classic flavours with a twist. The seasonal spiced pumpkin cupcake with lighter than air buttercream meringue frosting will remind you of newly fallen leaves and fresh crisp air. It’s rich but not too sweet and perfectly complemented with a cup of smoky bergamot tea. Other morsels like their French macarons have been claimed as the city’s best. When you have decided on the perfect fix for your sweet tooth, relax on the modern Victorian furniture or share in small talk at the communal wooden tables. Enjoy the surroundings of this beautiful space. You’re in no hurry to leave.
Visitors do have their perks when visiting Bobette & Belle. Their kitchen is right on the catwalk to the toilet. If you time it right you might catch a glimpse of the Pastry team assembling a multi-tiered cake for their next magazine shoot. Sprinkles, chocolate ganache and royal icing are also laid out for your viewing pleasure. Be careful as you might have to pony-step your way around hundreds and thousands or two. Plan to pop in around teatime for a full choice of goodies.
