Milk [London] – The hair salon for champs
Pimps & Pinups in Spitalfields, East London, is a boutique hair salon with an interior that is a cross between an auto-body shop and a 1950’s Hollywood movie set. The salon is badass with a playful charm. The retro-glam space is an amalgam of bright lights, backstage dressing room mirrors and interesting looking people. The salon name is plastered on a brick wall in fluorescent green; these hair Pimps want you to know they are here to make a statement and make you look Good.
On arrival, I was warmly greeted by Dorothy who fit the Pinup part with fire-engine red hair, short cropped bangs, and a fun poodle skirt. She offered me a drink and began the coiffing. Meanwhile, sound waves of Method Man and Wu-tang Clan blared overhead. The vibe of the place is really fun and enjoyable. The stylists are friendly, un-pretentious, and incredibly skilled at cutting all hair types, from rock-star cuts to simple trims and blowouts. Each stylist has their own story about what drove them to London, and are only too happy to talk about their first haircut and love for scissors.
Located in a neighborhood where there is a high volume of traffic from the ever-popular Spitalfields Market nearby, Pimps & Pinups is easy to find just off the main path, wedged between a French clothing boutique and a lingerie store. The area is a fantastic shopping and dining district, and makes for a great afternoon jaunt or evening night out, especially to show off your new hairdo as you step out like a star!
